Sacral Neuromodulation
What is Overactive Bladder (OAB)?
Overactive bladder is a common condition caused by an involuntary contraction of the bladder muscle (detrusor) leading to urinary frequency, urgency, nighttime voiding, and leakage of urine. This can have a significant impact on your quality of life.
How is the Sacral Neuromodulation procedure performed?
Sacral Neuromodulation (SNM) is performed in two quick, minimally invasive stages under local anesthesia:
- Stage 1 (Trial Phase): Under X-ray guidance, a thin lead wire is inserted through the lower back near the S3 sacral nerve and connected to an external battery worn on a belt. You test it for 1–2 weeks to confirm at least a 50% improvement in symptoms.
- Stage 2 (Permanent Implant): If the trial succeeds, a small rechargeable or non-rechargeable pulse generator (similar to a pacemaker) is implanted just under the skin in the upper buttock and attached to the lead wire.
The device delivers mild electrical pulses to modulate bladder and bowel nerve signals, and you adjust settings using a handheld wireless remote.
How Much Does Sacral Neuromodulation Cost?
The cost of sacral neuromodulation varies based on your treatment plan and insurance benefits. Because treatment typically includes a trial before permanent implantation, your out-of-pocket responsibility can differ from one patient to another.
Our team can review billing details with you before treatment so you have a clearer idea of what to expect.
Why Choose Urogynecology of Kansas City for Sacral Neuromodulation?
Urogynecology of Kansas City is one of the few practices in the Kansas City metro area with physicians who are both board-certified and fellowship-trained in urogynecology. Dr. Patrick Nosti and Dr. Abby Stork diagnose and treat bladder and pelvic floor disorders, including patients who may benefit from sacral neuromodulation.
The practice is also an Axonics Center of Excellence, a designation recognizing Dr. Nosti and Dr. Stork for their experience with Axonics Therapy, patient outcomes, and ongoing care for patients with bladder and bowel symptoms.
FAQs About Sacral Neuromodulation
Is sacral neuromodulation permanent?
The implanted device is intended for ongoing therapy, but it can be removed if needed. Follow-up visits are also used to adjust stimulation settings based on your response.
What happens if the trial does not improve my symptoms?
The trial helps determine whether sacral nerve stimulation meaningfully improves your urinary symptoms before a permanent device is implanted. If there is insufficient improvement, the temporary lead is removed, and permanent implantation is not pursued.
Will I need follow-up after the implant?
Yes. Follow-up visits are used to adjust the device settings and monitor how well treatment is controlling your symptoms. Once appropriate settings are established, ongoing follow-up is generally recommended annually or as needed.
