Recurrent UTIs
What Is Recurrent UTIs?
A urinary tract infection is defined as a bacterial infection of the urinary tract (including bladder, ureters, and/or kidneys). Common symptoms include a strong urge to urinate, frequent urination in small amounts, often accompanied by a burning sensation, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are defined as three or more infections in a year or 2 or more infections in a 6-month period.
There are many risk factors for recurrent urinary tract infections, including urinary retention, menopause, sexual activity, use of spermicides, and personal or family history of UTIs. Treatment recommendations are based on the underlying cause. Often this can be determined based on an examination in our office, but at times it may require further diagnostic testing.
