Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence, no matter how minor or infrequent it may seem, can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable issue. If you’re having problems with bladder control, the physicians and advanced practitioners at Urogynecology of Kansas City, can help. Book your incontinence evaluation in our main office or at a satellite location.

What is Urinary Incontinence?

Some women who have incontinence aren’t very bothered by it, especially when it doesn’t happen very often, or doesn’t prevent them from doing things they want to do. Very often, however, many women suffer from this problem for a long time before bringing it up with someone who can help.

Is Urinary Incontinence a Normal Part of Aging?

You may be under the impression that leakage of urine is normal, especially for a woman who has had children or may have gone through menopause. While incontinence is very common, at any life stage it is not considered normal.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence does not affect every woman in the same way. Stress urinary incontinence causes leakage with activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, laughing, exercising, or lifting. Urgency incontinence is associated with a sudden, difficult-to-control need to urinate, while mixed incontinence includes features of both.

Knowing which type you have helps guide treatment. At Urogynecology of Kansas City, we look at when leakage occurs, how often it happens, and how much it interferes with your daily life before recommending next steps.

Treatment Options for Urinary Incontinence

The good news is that most women (80 to 90%) who seek help find that their symptoms improve. There is a wide array of treatment options, ranging from lifestyle and behavioral changes to surgical options. Get evaluated and review potential treatment options for your UI. The more you know, the more confident you will be in choosing the direction of treatment. With treatment, you can recover parts of your life that you may have let go. Below is a table of common options divided by UI type. You can click on each item to learn more. If you have mixed incontinence, which affects 30% of women with UI, the treatment is based on the predominant type. If you are uncertain, testing is available to guide treatment.

What to Expect During an Incontinence Evaluation

Your evaluation starts with a conversation about your symptoms, medical history, medications, and bladder habits. Depending on what we find, additional diagnostic testing may be recommended to better understand how your bladder and pelvic floor are functioning.

The goal is to identify the cause of your symptoms and match treatment to your needs. You will have time to ask questions and understand your options before deciding how you want to proceed.

As a Provider in the region I self referred to Dr. Nosti for female pelvic organ prolapse and stress incontinence. From the time I walked in the door for my initial consult to my post-op surgical follow up the process has been seamless. Any hiccups were anticipated and a plan was in place prior. I’ve been nothing but happy with this process and my results.

This place was amazing, I was treated kindly and softly, everything explained to me as we went, my options and things to help till my next appointment. The office itself is soft, clean, and quiet to help you feel more relaxed in an uncomfortable situation. Everyone was very friendly and respectful. I highly recommend this office. Dr Stork was very friendly, took her time, explained everything and presented my options, pros and cons for each and let me make the choice. She was light-hearted and helped me feel at ease.

I have dealt with IC and bladder pain for the last 3 years. Went to a urologist for years and tried anything he threw at me but after years of suffering and plenty of my own research (spiraling), I found Latasha online. She is the first provider that made me feel seen and heard and actually helped me feel better. Thank you, Latasha! ❤️

Dr. Nosti and LaTasha are excellent practitioners. They are a busy practice but always have time to make you feel like you're the only patient. (I wouldn't recommend a practice that isn't busy... if it's not, the practitioners aren't any good). The staff is excellent, too. I'm a bit of an expert when judging urologists... I'm in my 50's and was born with a bladder condition. Needless to say, I've seen many urologists since childhood (I move around a lot).
